and fill it 10 - 12 times a day. Water is such an important part of our diets. We can't expect to transform our bodies or lose unwanted fat in a dehydrated state. Aim for 3 litres a day.
Why, you may ask? Let me count the ways. First of all, our bodies are 70% water. That should tell you something right there. We all know we can go much longer without food than without water.
The body needs a lot of water to maintain its daily functions efficiently. In addition, water helps to flush out harmful toxins, as well as prime the body for fat loss.
If the body isn't getting enough water, it does everything it can to hold on to the water it does have. The problem with this, is the way it holds onto the water. You see, over 70% of our muscles are made up of water. Water helps to give the muscles that full, pumped up look (along with glycogen). However, if there isn't sufficient water, that water is used for other things, leaving us with that awful bloatedness. The way to get rid of that excess water, believe it or not, is to take in enough water.
Water is essential for proper kidney function. If the kidneys are functioning at a sub-optimal level, it receives assistance from the liver. One of the liver's functions is to metabolize fat. Therefore, when the liver is lending a hand to the kidneys, your fat metabolism process is less efficient, and therefore, less productive.
Just like businesses, we should seek to make sure that our processes are working as efficiently as possible to reduce costs (fat) and increase the profits from our hard work. This is why it is important to drink water to help weight loss - to keep our fat metabolizing process running as efficiently as possible.
Additionally, the extra water you drink water to lose weight acts as an extremely effective appetite suppressant. This is because your stomach will fill with water, leaving less room for food, and causing you to feel full sooner with less food. Less food generally means less calories. And less calories can help make it easier to be in a state of calorie deficit.
Do not worry if you are initially unable to drink this much water throughout the day. Try to drink a little more water each day until you can reach your intake goal consistently.
Don't make the mistake of believing that you only need water when you're thirsty. The body can become dehydrated without any symptoms, whether on the hottest summer day or the coldest day of winter. We lose water through perspiration (not just the kind you see, but continual "invisible" perspiration as well), through waste removal and through breathing.
Water loss increases with hot weather, necessitating greater intake and emphasis on water, but keeping properly hydrated should be a year-round priority.
Most people walk around in some state of dehydration all the time. Symptoms such as fatigue, memory problems, focus, constipation and headaches, just to name a few, can often be traced to a lack of water. Additionally, digestive problems can often be aided or even cured by simply increasing water intake.
All liquids are not equal!!! Outside of a post-workout sports drink to replace lost sodium and electrolytes, the focus of your liquid consumption should be on plain old water. Five glasses of juice, five glasses of soda, and five beers won't equate 15 glasses of water. To process the sugars, the body needs water. With a soda and the like, you are basically quenching a thirst only to then recreate that thirst.
Water is that important. Not drinking enough will affect your ability to burn fat and build muscle. Whether tap or bottled. Whether thirsty or not. Just...
Drink Water

Thanks for your post, one of the main reasons I shy away from drinking enough water is I hate having to go to the loo every half an hour. Water seems to pass straight through me. I can't sit through a movie with out needing the loo and I can't get a solid night's sleep if I drink enough water, so I don't.
Any suggestions for that?
I'm afraid, it's something you'll just have to be patient with in the beginning. I'm finding, now, after having drunk enough for a few weeks, that my body is adjusting to the extra intake. I'm sure my liver and kidneys are back to doing their normal job again and finally, the sufficient amount of water is being used properly. Urine should be light in colour and should occur every 2 or so hours. Good luck!! :)
I do love these little "articles" of yours - so inspiring! Nicola
