Instead of flying, we decided to drive up to spend Christmas with family in Durban this year. And, very brave of me, I took on the family challenge and CAMPED(!) all the way up, for a period after Christmas, and all the way down to Cape Town again. I am proud of myself!!
We left home on Sunday, 18th December 2011, at 11am. We went to bed early the night before with the best of intentions of leaving by 4am, but those intentions soon died when Savannah decorated our bedroom floor at 1am with a tummy bug :( It must have just been something she ate, as plans resumed once everyone had woken up after a bit more sleep.
Our first stop was beautiful Knysna. WOW!! The views, the house we want to buy! Yes, we even managed to get in to view a house we love and would like to purchase as an investment holiday home. We camped along the Knysna Quays and enjoyed meals out with no washing up! I enjoyed a 10km run along the lake. We packed up, showered and headed off for another day of fun.
Addo Elephant National Park was our next adventure, offering great camp grounds, clean facilities and a park full of animals! We were lucky enough to spot a couple of elephants on the other side of the fence from our tent! Luckily they were on the other side!!!
Night #3 was Yellow Sands in Cintsa, just outside East London. We fell asleep to the sound of the waves that night. Just so relaxing!
On Wednesday, 21st December, we were up in Durbs with the family. With Christmas just around the corner, we got busy preparing for all the fun and festivities. We went out with Amy and Robert and kiddies one night and decided to head up to Sodwana Bay for new year.
Along the way we learned: to pull together; those who want a place to sleep, help set up camp; if you want to feel human, just take the plunge, put your heebie jeebies aside and shower in a communal ablution!! (this applies to Claire); take it easy--camping is the perfect way to yank the stress out of you; laugh; life doesn't have to be 100% organized 100% of the time--we booked campsites for the night an hour or two before we arrived at a chosen destination for the day; when it's blazing hot, just take a cold shower--in your clothes, as you'll be bone dry within an hour, but feel so much more comfortable; don't buy a tent from Mr Price.
